Plain Tangy Tomato Rasam






While searching for Healthy Soup Recipes, one must never forget the importance of Rasam in South Indian Cuisine. Rasam is a kind of soup made out of tamarind. It does have a tangy taste and is loaded with spices at the right amount so that you can eat your rice with all the tanginess you prefer. You can make a variety of rasams. The rasam variations are Parippu rasam or Dal Rasam, Pineapple Rasam, Drumstick Rasam, Pepper Rasam, Masala Rasam, Garlic Rasam and Tomato Rasam. When you are having a very bad cold, you can feel relaxed when you drink some rasam or when you eat rice loaded with Rasam.



Making a rasam is easy, but most people prefer to make it with the help of a rasam powder. Try making the perfect rasam with your own rasam mix. Ingredients



·        Tamarind – Size of a lemon
·        Tomato- 1 large
·        Shallots – 6
·        Garlic – 8 cloves
·        Pepper powder – ¼ tsp
·        Red Chilly Powder – ½ tsp
·        Fenugreek powder – a pinch
·        Asafetida – ¼ tsp
·        Mustard seeds – ¼ tsp
·        Curry leaves
·        Coriander leaves


Method



·        In a mixer, add shallots and garlic and run the mixer for 2 min. Keep it aside
·        Take the tamarind ball and mix with 500 ml of water or more
·        Add some salt and adjust the taste
·        Take a tava and heat it
·        Add some oil to it. One tablespoon of coconut oil/vegetable oil would do
·        When the oil gets heated, add the mustard seeds to it and allow it to pop
·        Now you can add curry leaves
·        Add the ground shallots and ginger to the oil and sauté till golden brown
·        Add red chilly powder and turmeric powder and sauté well
·        Now add the finely chopped tomatoes and sauté till the tomatoes get cooked
·        To this, add the tamarind water mixed with salt and stir well
·        To this, you may add the pepper powder, fenugreek powder and asafetida powder. Stir well. Check the salt and add more if you feel it is less
·        Finely chop the coriander leaves and add them as garnishing
·        Switch off the flame before the rasam boils.
·        Ps: Care should be taken not to boil the rasam, or else you will lose the taste of the rasam.
·        Serve with rice. Pour rasam on rice and accompany them with vegetarian or non vegetarian side dishes.


Usually, after a heavy meal, you will be offered a glass of rasam for speeding the process of digestion. Rasam is also good for you when you are suffering from a very bad cold. So while trying to check for some of the simplest and healthy soup recipes, make sure you try a rasam.
