Sheema Chakka Chips or Bread Fruit Chips- The Crispy Light Evening Snack




Sheema Chakka or Bread fruit is a common vegetable found in countries in Asia and Africa. It is used as a vegetable. You can consume Bread fruit after cooking it plainly with salt and adding coconut milk or coconut gratings to it. It does taste great. Yet another method is to fry it. You would not expect such a tasty chips in your plate ever before. And do note that Bread fruit chips is something much healthier and tastier than ready-made snacks that are offered to you in stores. It is simply irresistible.



Usually you find a lot of Bread fruit in market during season times. But when it is off season, you rarely get a glimpse of it. I like Bread fruit chips all crispy. So I make sure that it is sliced finely. Finely sliced bread fruit does taste yummy. You can always make tasty bread fruit chips for your children instead of offering them those added with artificial flavors or colors. Simple, yet tasty, this has always been my favorite snack right from my childhood. Fried Bread fruit chips in the containers were always a temptation for me when I was a child. You wouldn’t know when you finished the whole lot. ;)



Even to this day, I make sure that I buy bread fruit at home whenever it is season and make it a point to fry them or steam them up. Everyone at home loves bread fruit varieties a lot. You too can try out this healthy snack right at your home. Just check the recipe and enjoy a bowl of home-made bread fruit chips. This is a very simple recipe and hope you would make it often.


Ingredients


  • Bread fruit – 1
  • Salt
  • Coconut oil or Vegetable oil- For frying



Method



·         Peel of the outer hard skin of bread fruit
·         Clean it well
·         Cut it into half
·         Clean the hard portion off
·         Now you may cut the bread fruit into long pieces
·         With the help of a slicer, slice it into small pieces
·         Take a pan and keep it on the stove top
·         Heat the pan and pour oil for frying
·         Take a bowl with water
·         Mix sufficient amount of salt in the water
·         Now put the sliced bread fruit into the bowl with salt water
·         Take them out and drain off excess water
·         Put them into the hot oil in the pan. Take care not to stand close to the pan. Water content in the bread fruit causes the oil to splutter around.
·         Fry it for 5- 10 minutes till it becomes golden brown and crispy.
·         Take out the bread fruit chips after it is fried properly
·         Remove the fried chips on kitchen tissues to drain off excess oil
·         Allow it to cool
·         After it cools down, remove them to air tight containers
·         Serve with tea in the evening or when you are watching a movie together at home
·         Enjoy!!
