Rava or Semolina Upma is one of the common breakfast foods in South of India. The tricky part of cooking this breakfast variety is that it can be made the best and worst breakfast ever. In short, if you prepare it carefully following the right steps, you will succeed in making the perfect and tasty upma. If you are not careful, you may end up with some sticky result that you will not probably love at all.

Here I am going to give you a step by step process of making the perfect upma without any mistakes. Make sure you follow each and every step so that you end up with a successful breakfast delight that you would often love to try in the mornings.

I have learnt to cook Semolina upma from my Mom. She makes the perfect upmas, but plain one with onions and uzhunnu parippu. Here I have added vegetables to make it more yummy and delicious. This one really tempts anyone, and I think you would also love it a lot.

Ingredients

·         Semolina or Rava – 2 cups
·         Onions- 2 medium
·         Green chilly – 1
·         Carrot – 1
·         Beans – 6 nos
·         Coconut gratings- 1 cup
·         Uzhunnu parippu – ¼ tbs
·         Salt
·         Oil
·         Water

Method

·         Take a thick bottomed pan and heat it
·         Pour  4 tbs of oil
·         Add mustard seeds and allow it to crack
·         Add curry leaves
·         Add Urad dal or Uzhunnu parippu and let it become golden brown
·         Now add the finely chopped onions and green chilly to the pan and sauté well
·         Add the finely chopped vegetables (Carrots and Beans) to the onions
·         Add a bit of salt right enough for the vegetables alone. Close the lid and allow it to cook for 5 min
·         After 5 min, add Semolina to it
·         With a spatula, sauté the semolina till golden brown
·         Be very careful not to burn the semolina as it will not taste well
·         Now you may add a little amount of salt to the semolina. Care not to add too much of salt.
·         When you feel that the semolina has been heated well, you may move on to the next step
·         Sprinkle 1 cup of water on to the hot semolina in the pan. NEVER POUR IT ALL TOGETHER OR IT MAY GET STICKY
·         Mix well with the help of a spatula and close the lid for 5 min
·         After 5 min, open the lid and sprinkle ½ a cup of water to it and stir well and close the lid for yet another 5 min
·         After 5 min, open the lid and check if the semolina has started cooking if you feel you need to add water, add ½ a cup and stir well and then close the lid.
·         Cook for 10 min
·         After 10 min, check if the semolina is cooked well. You may taste and check the salt.
·         If you find the semolina in a raw form, continue to add ¼ cup of water and close the lid for further cooking
·         Add coconut gratings to the cooked semolina.
·         If you find that salt is a bit less, then you may add a bit more salt with coconut gratings
·         Close the lid for another 5 min
·         After 5 min, you may switch off the stove
·          Serve Semolina Upma or Rava Upma with bananas, or any curries
·         PS. Eating Rava Upma without any curries too is tasty
